My name is Tsunao Okumura, the Dean of the Department of Economics at Yokohama National

University in Japan. I am sending this message to our partner universities in order to promote our All-English PhD Program in Economics. I hope you will kindly pass the following information to your

students and faculty members who are interested in PhD study in economics in Japan. The Department of Economics, Yokohama National University will launch a Data Analytics path in theInternational PhD Program in Economics in October 2023, to offer an integrated education in modernempirical economics and data science. All lectures are given in English in the program. We are currently applying for the continued designation as an International Priority Graduate Programby the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture (MEXT). If approved by MEXT, we will be able tocontinue offering MEXT scholarships (University Recommendation) to a few incoming students we selectfrom among those who pass the entrance exam. Compared to the Embassy Recommendation MEXTscholarship, the University Recommendation MEXT scholarship is less known, and hence, few apply. Infact, we often have had some MEXT scholarships left over because too few applied in the past. For thosewho are interested, we make the admission and scholarship facts available on the following page.

In order to encourage more to apply, we have established a new policy of giving preferential treatment tograduates of YNU’s academic exchange partner universities, the university-wide or the departmental, inselecting candidates for the MEXT scholarship from among those who pass the entrance exam. The graduate school individually assesses the eligibility of some applicants before accepting applicationfees and formal applications. The eligibility assessment period for these applicants is September 26 to 30,2022.For other applicants, the application period is October 18 to November 7, 2022.For furtherinformation on admission, please visit the program’s web site at
